Pub Review: The Southampton Arms

Located in Kentish Town, London, The Southampton Arms is the only London ale and cider house to only sell beers and ciders from the small independent breweries in the United Kingdom. The pub is an old-fashioned watering hole that eschews the modern trappings of modern pubs. The Southampton Arms do not accept bookings, they do not reserve tables, and they do not reserve areas of the bar. In fact, the pub does not even have a telephone.
The Southampton Arms is a small pub and only serves ten ales, eight ciders, and hot meat baps. Sorry no Greek recipes people. The pub does have a beer garden where they serve their limited number drinks on a rotating basis. The pub creates a wonderful and personal ambiance. The bar is situated in the center of the room with benches on each side. If the bar is not your style, tables and chairs are available. The walls are cluttered with vintage photos that are arranged with on rhyme or reason, which makes it authentic.
The locals that frequent the pub and the staff are friendly. The pub dog is friendly as well. You can go in alone and walk out with a bunch of new friends. An old record player spins tunes in the bar. If you’re looking for live music, check the place out on Wednesdays when the piano in the back of the bar comes alive. The food is simple and stated and the drinks flow all night. If you are looking for a place that is away from the hustle and bustle, away from the chain pubs, and away from the loud and unfriendly places, The Southampton Arms is the pub to go to. Just don’t try and call ahead.
